Point-of-Care Ultrasound

OVERVIEW

JABFM is soliciting papers that explore and examine the use of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) in family medicine and primary care practices  We seek research, review, and commentary manuscripts on how POCUS is being utilized clinically.  Specifically, how POCUS is shaping infrastructure and clinical workflow and its impacts on patient outcomes and practice finances.

TOPICS

All manuscripts should be pertinent to the practice of family medicine.

The following are examples of high priority topics for this theme issue:

  • The scope, indications, frequency, and quality measures, including both short- and long-term clinical outcomes, of the use of POCUS.
  • Measurement and evaluation of clinician competency in performing POCUS.
  • Cost-effectiveness studies of POCUS in comparison to alternative clinical care.
  • Legal and ethical aspects of incorporating POCUS.
  • Patient and provider satisfaction with the use of POCUS.
  • Descriptions of practice structures  that accommodate POCUS, financial and billing considerations, as well as variations in clinicians and practices employing POCUS.
  • Practical considerations for implementation, including incorporating POCUS into clinical practice, scheduling of POCUS, specific equipment needed, etc.
  • Practice Improvement and Quality Improvement studies focused on POCUS. Short videos or pictures are encouraged.
  • Implementation and outcomes of POCUS training, including such aspects as types of trainees, cost, uptake, evaluation, and longer-term use by those trained.
  • Long-term considerations for POCUS including challenges (e.g., financial viability), and benefits (impact on averting more invasive diagnostic testing).

DEADLINE

The deadline for consideration for this theme issue is January 1, 2025.

Please note that acceptance is not guaranteed, and is dependent upon the double-blind peer-review outcome.
