2018 was the 31st year of print and 16th year of online publication of the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine (JABFM). Here we provide our annual report of articles published in 2018 that were of greatest interest to our readers. Table 1 shows the 3 most frequently read articles by issue in 2018 from Volume 31. Once again, original research proves to be the most-read type of article. In Table 2, we provide the 20 most frequently read articles in 2018 from all volumes (Volume 1 to 31). Historically, clinical articles tend to be the most read.
In addition, we provide an update on the content usage statistics over the past 8 years. Figure 1 illustrates the number of total access events for JABFM content from 2011 to 2018. The year 2018 was the busiest year for online usage activity in JABFM's history, with an average of 843,773 content usage requests a month, and a total of 10.125 million during the year. Content activity was up 9% in 2018 compared with content usage requests during 2017 and, when compared with 2011, we note a 111% increase. Full-text articles were the most accessed during 2018, with an average of 185,768 monthly requests, followed by PDF articles, with 63,749 average monthly requests, and then abstracts, with 51,855 average monthly requests.
As always, we welcome reader feedback about published articles. Letters to the editor can also be submitted for peer review and publication using the author portal.
