2026 Applications
CLOSED
The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) Foundation, the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine (JABFM), and The Department of Family Medicine of the Medical College of Georgia are pleased to announce the creation of a new Research and Editing Fellowship.
This fellowship is designed to develop skills and provide experience to a family medicine faculty person with interests in evidence-based medicine, clinical research, and medical editing. A graduate of this fellowship will be able to conduct high-quality critical appraisal of primary care research, to write manuscripts for the peer-reviewed medical literature, and to serve on a family medicine journal’s editorial board or editor team.
FELLOWSHIP CANDIDATES
Preference will be given to candidates with a background that is underrepresented in medicine, including racial/ethnic minorities, women, or a rural background. The ideal fellowship candidate will be less than 10 years out of training. Candidates must currently be faculty in a Department of Family Medicine or a Family Medicine residency program. Candidates are expected to have some clinical research experience, including publication in the peer-reviewed medical literature. Ideally, candidates will have served as a peer reviewer at least several times.
FELLOWSHIP STRUCTURE
The Fellowship is a 2-year commitment. Both years of the Fellowship will be part-time. During both years, the fellow will function as:
- a member of the JABFM lead editorial team
- a member of a family medicine research team at the Medical College of Georgia
- a part-time National Journal Club Committee member
As a member of the editorial team, fellows perform regular peer reviews for the journal, co-edit manuscripts, and attend weekly virtual team meetings. As a member of a research team, fellows join an ongoing research project at the Medical College of Georgia. As part of the National Journal Club, fellows critically appraise the literature and write questions to be used as part of the ABFM's Maintenance of Certification activities.
During the first year, fellows complete two in-person weeks, once in the Fall and again in the Spring, at the home office of JABFM at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. During each week, the fellow will engage in a structured curriculum, including principles of medical editing, critical appraisal of the medical literature, and practice-based research. The ABFM Foundation will provide $15,000 annually to the fellow’s home institution to help cover travel expenses incurred during the Fellowship.
During the second year, fellows complete two in-person weeks at the home office of JABFM and complete 2-4 weeks at ABFM Headquarters in Lexington, Kentucky, as an ABFM Visiting Scholar to complete a scholarly project that aligns with the mission and purposes of the ABFM. Travel to Lexington will be covered by the Visiting Scholars program. The purpose of this project is to directly apply the research skills developed in the first year of the program. The project can be tailored to the fellow’s interests. Ideally, the project creates a publishable scholarly project, that would preferably be submitted to JABFM.
Outside of the on-site weeks, approximately 1-2 hours per week while at the fellow’s home institution will be required for the Fellowship. In total, the Fellowship will be approximately a 0.1 FTE position both years.
The fellow will participate in the ABFM National Journal Club and receive an honorarium for this work. Additionally, the fellow will be a member of the JABFM Editorial Board.
Activities associated with the Fellowship may be eligible for CME and MOC credit.
