What Do Physicians Recommend To Their Overweight and Obese Patients? J Am Board Fam Med 2009; 22: 115-122 [Abstract] [Full text] [PDF] In all hospitals, medical clinics and nursing homes, there should be a registered dietitian on staff. One role of the dietitian is to provide nutritional counseling to patients. If the doctor feels that he is not trained to advise the patient on weight management, he should seek the expert who is the dietitian. A patient should not be sent home without adequate information to manage his or her nutritional health. The doctor should make sure that patient receives instructions before or upon discharge. Patients can be followed up in the clinic or referred to a dietitian or nutritionist in the community |
